CHRISTINE

As I sat down to write my first book review, I had a hard time choosing what novel to talk about here. Two things were clear: the author had to be Stephen King, my all time favorite, and I couldn't go with something brand new (mostly because I wanted to set a trend and not chase after 2007 best sellers!). I have nothing against the newer stuff that's out there (especially King's work!), but I wanted any of the visitors here to feel comfortable about reviewing any book- new or old- on WriterBookie.Com. So, with these things in mind, I went with one of my all time favorites.

Now, for those of you who haven't read Christine, don't be so quick to judge without knowing the story! And whatever you do, don't base your opinion solely on the movie. I'm not knocking John Carpenter's flick, but as most readers know, the movies hardly hold a candle to the books. At any rate, I was fourteen when I first discovered Christine, and this story has been one of my favorites ever since. There were elements to it that obviously called for my teenaged attention, but there are still pieces of this book that will forever be locked in my brain.

Christine is the love story of an outcast boy (Arnie Cunningham), his beloved car and what happens when people come between them. For a fourteen year old, this book had it all! The car, the girl, the reinvention of a loser, teenage rebellion, profanity... man, I get goosebumps thinking about what this book made me feel at that age! Arnie, who just doesn't fit in, decides to buy his first vehicle in an effort to gain his independence from his parents. His best friend, Dennis Guilder, tries to talk him out of it certain that Arnie is wasting his money on a clunker. What neither of the two boys realize is that Christine is about to change their lives forever.

As the story progresses and Arnie begins to "rebuild" his red '58 Plymouth Fury, Christine reveals her story and amazing abilities. The more Arnie falls in love with her, the more she loves him back, and when a few of the local bullies threaten Arnie and decide to trash his one true love, all hell breaks lose! Christine goes to great lengths to protect Arnie, even if it means disposing of his new girlfriend, Leigh Cabot.

By the end of the book, Christine goes on one last killing spree in an effort to take out Dennis and Leigh and have Arnie all to herself, proving to the reader that love is blind indeed. There is so much more I could tell you, but I'll save all of the good suprises for King to share with you!

Written in 1983 by the Master of Horror, Christine is a must read for anyone who has ever been young and in love. Stephen King will have you ducking away from oncoming headlights and thinking twice about how your vehicle must feel about you!
